The Sisters of the Divine Redeemer

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer was founded in 1849 in Niederbronn-les-Bains (France) by Erzsébet Eppinger, who also became known by the name of Sister Mother Mária Alfonza.

Mother Alfonza, having been bedridden on several occasions from a young age and having experienced how poor patients were left to their own devices in their own homes, decided to found a new congregation to take care of the sick at home and the education of children by providing them with a religious education. The first Sisters of the Divine Redeemer arrived from Niederbronn-les-Bains in Hungary in 1863 where they established a kindergarten, a school and a hospital. From 1863, a house of the Congregation was also founded in Sopron, where the formation of the Sisters began. Later the Congregation also extended to Budapest, Iglo (today Slovakia), Kismarton (today Eisenstadt – Austria) and to Elizabeth (New Jersey – USA).

The provincial seat of the Congregation is currently located in Budapest. The Studentate and the Szent Anna Convent are also active in the same building.
